This is a concept piece built around the CK Be fragrance line; the working theme was “Cold & Bold”. Because the product bottle is a minimal, matte black with white logos, I wanted to emphasize this design by backlighting to create inverted contrast. Always best to work with the packaging instead of against it. There was a lot of light being dumped into this thing but it was well controlled!
The tabletop set was constructed to provide slightly soft illumination from left and right, incidental to the bottle edges via two strobe heads + zoom reflectors shooting through diffused plexi panels + blue gels. A gobo was used directly as the background with a third strobe head (no reflector or glass, bare tube) behind it for a hard point source. If I had a Profoto Hardbox I would have used it here. Lastly, a fourth strobe head was placed directly above the bottle aimed at an 8-inch fill card above the camera lens hood which provided just enough fill to pop the logos and define the droples. An additional small mirror was used to light the "Calvin Klein" logo at the bottom (and then cleaned up in post). Diffusion spray was used to create the background effects and droplet styling was used on the bottle itself in two passes. The final is a composite of three shots (I'll leave that a mystery). The base is the result of a semi-reflective plexi floor + clever acrylic ice placement around a crystal cigar ashtray, mostly by my assistant for this shot.
The shot sequence was produced using a Leaf digital back on a Cambo technical camera + Nikkor-AM 120mm lens. The lights were Profoto D1 1000’s and 500’s triggered via Air.
