The PhotoVideoEDU Featured Student for October 2014, Gina V. Harvey, plans to focus on portraiture and conceptual work after receiving her associate’s degree from Cosumnes River College. She talked with us about her switch from a career in advertising to photography studies, and her interest in combining multiple media types.
PhotoVideoEDU: How did you get into photography?
Gina V. Harvey: I moved to the United States three and a half years ago. I didn’t have a background in photography, but I had worked in advertising with photographic production for many years, in my home country, Indonesia. I didn’t know anything about cameras; I just knew about photographic production. So it was a challenge for me to learn to work with cameras. After I moved here, my husband said, “Why don't you back to college and pursue your dreams?” So I went to photography school, and this is my second year.
PhotoVideoEDU: Are you taking a specific direction with your photography?
Gina V. Harvey: I like to shoot people. I like to make pictures with a concept, sometimes by blending images together. I like combining drawings, illustrations, and photographs. I like sketching, so sometimes I draw a room or some other background image and combine it with a photograph of a person. I work a lot with Photoshop to adjust the lighting and color.
PhotoVideoEDU: What are your plans for after graduation?
Gina V. Harvey: I want to open my own studio for conceptual portraiture. I don't want to do portraits where people are just smiling for the camera. I want to show people's fantasies and dreams.
